I have touched upon the sizeable instant pots in another of my articles, specifically in the best instant pot for large families. I could pull out of that one, but it doesn’t feel right.
This is mainly because the family of 4 needs a smaller instant pot, not by much, but still. By smaller, I mean the device in size from 6 to 8 quarts.
In my honest opinion, the best instant pot for a family of 4 is the Instant Pot 8QT Aura Pro. It has an easy-to-read display, a good variety of functions, and will serve you well for a long time.
The best thing about it is that you can use it as your kids will grow up and become young adults. Eight quarts (7.5 liters) of a delicious meal can feed the whole family two times a minimum. Of course, it will also become handy when you have a little house party.
Of course, there are other options to consider. Their quick overview is in the little table below.
Name | Size |
Instant Pot 8QT Aura Pro | 8 quarts |
Rozmoz 14-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker | 6 quarts |
Instant Pot Duo Nova Pressure Cooker 7 in 1 | 6 quarts |
Now, let’s jump into more details about why and how to choose the best instant pot for your family of 4.

The size on an instant pot for family of 4
The size is, especially in this regard, highly debated. What is the right size of an instant pot for four people? It depends on the people, right?
You might be a family with a big appetite, which means that 8 quarts (7.5 liters) instant pot is just right for you, as the volume fits the amount required to feed you all. Or maybe you are used to cooking in large batches and store half of the food for later.
This goes the same for smaller instant pots of 6 quarts (5.6 liters). It might be a perfect size for your family with two small children. Or you don’t like wasting food or storing it, as you prefer a new meal every day. Or maybe you are a single parent, and you would like to spend more time with your family while feeding the rambunctious rascals in a reasonable time.
There is a lot of options and reasons, but my rule of thumb goes like this:
- 3 – 4 quarts: 1 or 2 people in a household
- 6 – 8 quarts: 3 or 4 people in a household
- 10 – 13+ quarts: 5+ people in a household
If you need anything more significant, you should be looking into restaurant-grade instant pots/pressure cookers like the one mentioned above, as they can provide up to 79 quarts worth of food.
The functions of an instant pot for family of 4
A good instant pot for a standard size family should have a nice variety of cooking options. Nothing to overkill it, but apart from the pressurized cooking, you should have more options.
The sear/sauté, bake, steam, stew, yogurt, rice, multigrain, and keep warm are the basic ones in general.
Even though, even the basic ones, are a bit too much to my liking. I realize that they are standard these days. I would personally prefer an instant pot that is good in just pressure cooking. You can say that I should go for the traditional pressure cooker, but where is the fun in that?
I don’t want to keep an eye out on the stove and pressure cooker. I want to enjoy life with my family and have things to be done without my attention.
My way of looking at things says that less is more. That you should have a specialized home cooking tech for every situation. The widespread practice these days is to have one thing that can do a lot of good, so I am sticking with it.
The price on an instant pot for family of 4
How much money should you spend on an instant pot for your family? Well, you don’t have to break the bank, but at the same time, you should not go with cheap options.
I do believe that a reasonable price is 100$. For this kind of money, you are getting the right quality product that will cover you in many different ways. In terms of worth, I do look a bit deeper into it in a different article, which can be found here.
Having something reliable that you know that can always deliver is excellent. I know this from experience. When I was younger and relatively poor, I tend to buy cheaper devices, saying things like: It will be fine. It is just the same as the expensive ones. I am only paying for a brand name. And so on…
Trust me. It is not true. More often than not, if you buy cheap things, you either risk your life and life of your loved ones or you go down by spiral of buying cheap home cooking tech over and over. Both of these options can cost you more in the end.
I am not saying that less expensive types of instant pots are dangerous, but they tend to break down more often for various reasons. Overheating, not heating enough, leaking, steam leakage, and others. If you just realized that you are not sure about an instant pot’s safety, I have the answer for you right here.
